Three Hawaiian princes rode redwood boards at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River in 1885, the first recorded surfing on the American mainland, and Santa Cruz has been a surf town ever since. A small museum in the lighthouse above Steamer Lane tells the story. On the hill behind the city, the University of California campus, opened in 1965, is set among redwoods.
